SSAB Laminar Chiller Plant

SP Engineering conducted a survey and developed a control scheme of the laminar cooling process in the rolling mill to assess the potential for adding chillers to reduce the laminar water temperatures. With this initial effort, SPE worked with the selected chiller rental company to implement the reconfiguration of the cooling water system to include 6,000 tons of packaged centrifugal chillers. The scope of work consisted of architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering. We designed a modular electrical control room and transformer skids. Design considerations consisted of constructability, reduction of footprint, limiting downtime, and sourcing of medium voltage power. This new chiller system was installed in 2019 during a scheduled outage and is performing per the specifications.
